AIPP

The project to create an International Academy of Prehistory and Protohistory (AIPP) responds to an expectation by the International Academic Union (UAI) in the face of the very low presence of prehistorians and protohistorians in the national academies.

The International Academy of Prehistory and Protohistory (AIPP) was created on December 7th, 2021 in Paris, as an association ‘loi 1901’, under the impetus of the UISPP.

The mission of the AIPP is to contribute to the progress of scientific knowledge of prehistory and protohistory. The AIPP is an international organization.

At its creation, the AIPP has defined two sections, that of prehistorians (hunter-gatherers) and that of protohistorians (farmers-herders), which cover a period from the origins of Humanity to the end of the Iron Age.

The AIPP comprises three categories of members: Emeritus Members, Full Members and corresponding Members

The number of AIPP members is limited to 40 members in each category, divided equally between prehistorians and protohistorians, i.e., a maximum of 120 members.

In order to ensure impartiality in the appointment of members, a list of criteria characterizing the activity of archaeological research has been drawn up. This list includes the academic degrees obtained, the professional level reached, archaeological excavation activities, scientific output, international notoriety and the distinctions received.

The AIPP organizes sessions during which the activities of the AIPP are presented and the admissions of new members are enacted.
